While big-name wineries in the Médoc may make 10,000 or 20,000 cases of wine in a vintage, Pomerol estates usually make somewhere between 1,000 and 4,000 cases. The region has only about 1,830 acres of vineyards in total -- about the same as some large wineries in California -- divided among slightly more than 150 estates.
Merlot rules in Pomerol, and nowhere in the world does this variety make more complete wines than on the flat clay-rich plateau that lies at the heart of this appellation. As in neighboring Saint-Emilion, vineyard size and scale of production in Pomerol are much smaller than on the grand estates of the Médoc.
