Synanthropic Suburbia therefore reimagines human animal interactions, using architecture to structure hybrid relationships that positively contribute to the urban ecosystem. The thesis is positioned within a landscape of rapid ecological transformation – the suburbs – and engages the space of greatest tension between human and animal – the domestic territory of the house.

These animals have evolved to the patterns of transformation, consumption, and production exhibited by human civilizations. Synanthropic Suburbia explores new disciplinary frontiers by integrating ecological principles into architectural design. By focusing on identifiable suburban elements like the chimney, eave and dormer the project makes ideas of multi-species cohabitation and environmental stewardship accessible to a wide audience. Oct 11, 2019 - Synanthropic Habitats propose scenarios where animals and humans live closely together in cross-species cities or abodes - they are the projects that most often come to mind when one thinks of Animal Architecture.

Sarah Gunawan's thesis entitled "Synanthropic Suburbia" explores these conditions and re-imagines human animal interactions in the domestic realm. A series of telescoping design experiments use architecture to structure hybrid relationships that positively contribute to the suburban ecosystem. Accordingly, “Animal Architecture wants your ideas about how synanthropic design can reshape, expand and redefine the context of urban thought and space.” Register by May 13—and check out a few submissions to last year’s Animal Architecture Awards here on BLDGBLOG. As the conceptual division between city and nature dissolves, architecture is called upon to negotiate the physical boundary between human and synanthropic animal. Entitled “synanthropic suburbia”, the project explores potential architectural habitats for wildlife of various kinds that live near and benefit from human habitation – thus the use of the term synanthropic, meaning living in symbiotic relation with human beings. As the conceptual division between city and nature dissolves, architecture is called upon to negotiate the physical boundary between human and synanthropic animal. The synanthropic condition lies within this emerging gradient. Synanthropes are species which exist between domestic and wild, who benefit from living in close proximity to humans yet remain beyond their control. The importance of green areas as local fauna habitats is also increasing [17]. Even a small space overgrown with synanthropic vegetation is sometimes sufficient and can become a refuge for insects [26–28]. It is proposed to distinguish between three models of organization in synanthropic plant communities formed under the influence of man: R-modle, communities of segetal weeds in fields of annual crops and at initial stages of restoration successions; R --> CRS-model, serial communities of the later stages of restoration successions; CRS --> S-model, serial communities of allogenic successions Synapse SQL architecture components.
